think this is because they are trying to stay as far as possible from the smells emanating from boston pizza...

the second is that there are two smart cars parked about ten car type='text'>drowing rabbits

so i'm at the pool last night - an insane venture at the best of times because it would seem than no one in this neighbourhood has anything better to do than hang out at the pool and stand around in the shallow end and adjust their goggles. each lane had like 6 swimmers and another 4 or so bystanders sort of hanging out and trying to decide whether they would try and actually complete a lap or not. not that i'm a huge swimmer but come on. there's a whole lane dedicated to 'leisure' and usually full of people doing impressions of kelp or other stationary aquatic creatures. yet, these other manotee (sp?) refuse to take advantage of the leisure lane - they mock the leisure lane. i hate these people.

so anyway, as i mentioned there is one lane marked leisure. the other two are 'fast' and 'slow'. i'm assuming this refers to the speed at which you are expected to swim in these lanes and does not refer to the mental competency of those doing the swimming. the pictures, however, on the sandwich boards referring to the lane speed are a bit more puzzling. on the slow lane there is a turtle, which, i admit, makes some sense. turtles are slow. however, in the water they can be pretty quick. not fin shark quick but fairly speedy. but i get the point.

the fast lane though makes little to no sense. there is a picture of a rabbit under the word fast. rabbits are fast, but can they swim? ok, so some right-wing psycho rabbits have been known to go on homicidal sprees but normally fluffy white mammals do not come to mind when i think of speedy watercraft. in fact, i think a turtle would rightly kick a rabbit's ass in a swimming race (unless the rabbit happened to be the rabbit of caerbannog in which case it would have gone psycho medieval on the turtle)
microwaveable find

i was nuking some lunch and came to the realization that our microwave sucks. despite 5 minutes on high (while spinning) my meal emerged in a tepid paste-like consistency that was anything but appetizing. so... i went to kijiji to see if there were any microwaves about that might fit my price range (cheap). i found a bunch but i must say that i know little to nothing about microwaves and quality so i thought i'd google a couple makes and models to see what i could find.

well, one make - the goldstar intellowave - led me to a video review by bunyon, an expotv member who positively cracks me up. the guy looks like he just woke up and was handed a package of something to blather on about and he does! the review is nothing more than a reading of the buttons and size of the microwave (a plus, it comes with a timer, in case your oven doesn't have a timer, you can use the one on your microwave).

some of his videos look like they were taken in a war bunker where stuffed animals are used in interrogation exercises.

he also has a dog and 'reviews' a wide assortment of dog biscuits and treats. for most of those he reads directly from the package with no hint of irony in his voice (kudos for that!).

some he's just phoning it in...

ok... i looked at the site a bit and these people get paid if i watch the videos so that's why they even bother. and given that the only real qualification is that they have to speak for a minute they're really just killing time (most videos last between one and a half and two minutes). funny for a couple of minutes but annoying afterwards...<div make it a heck of a lot more efficient and cheap. his idea - think of when you pick up a broad leaved piece of grass and blow across it - it warbles and makes a high pitched sound. well, if you could use this warbling to create energy you'd be in the energy business and will have barely broken a sweat. add a couple of magnets and some coiled wire and you are there. it's so simple you really do type='text'>top 100 canadian albums, oui

so a while back this guy, Bob Mersereau, put together a book on the top 100 canadian albums of all time. no real surprise that neil young's harvest took the top spot although i'm more partial to joni mitchell's blue or a number of more modern classics (including the weakerthan's left and leaving and bran van 3000's discosis - which didn't even make the top 100!). in fact, just one album was included in the top ten which was released in the past ten years - the arcade fire's funeral. this is a shame and omits a broad swath of great can-con, especially as we're starting to get recognized around the world (feist, anyone?). sarah harmer ranked high, deservedly so, but no new pornographers or malajube (which i'll get to in a second) or sam roberts among others.

anyway, i was reading an article in la presse today about how french canadian (read: quebecois) artists were snubbed. this is too true - there was a gaping hole of french stuff that the list didn't even feign to fill. however, i can understand that, historically, french artists have been pigeonholed, by either the recording industry or otherwise, geographically. you're more likely to find a manu chao song on the radio than anything by les trois accords. so... one of the comments afterward seemed to put the blame on english canada's lack of interest in french artists. this might be true to an extent, but really... i don't think that stands up to truth. there have been a number of spanish artists who have found success and there is an entire world music scene that runs the gamut from xhosa to russian that finds its niche. even sigur ros has a following and they make words up! i think that if people had a chance to hear the music they'd like it, buy the albums and so on.

the problem, more often that not, is that english canada doesn't get the opportunity to hear these artists.

for instance, right now there's a band in quebec called kain that is hotter than black vinyl car seats and yet they're invisible in english canada. a check of their tour dates reveals that they have few plans to cross into upper canada anytime soon. while i can find their album here in ottawa (in the french section) you wouldn't know it was there unless you were looking for it.

a side note - i picked up the new bran van today and when i went looking for it in a music world i eventually found it (after asking for assistance from the stunned staff) in the adult contemporary section. i thought that was hilarious.

malajube was somewhat able to break into english canada but it was a short-lived honeymoon and they've cooled considerably. however, if these bands got airplay i do think they would be supported - i went out and bought a copy of kain's last disc (and downloaded some ariane moffat - another great find) after hearing them on musique plus (which you can get in kingston! of course we don't get cable anymore...).
death to fruit flies

i've found a fun way of getting rid of fruit flies - and we have had lots of practice...

the window screens in our place aren't all that great - the frames are not level and so there are gaps to either side of the screen. this means that we're constantly battling flies and other critters that wander in. well, with the indoor compost and the cats wrecking havoc fruit flies have been promulgating to no end. it doesn't help that we've set a number of traps up that have, i believe, proved tempting to other fruit flies that are idly flying by our windows and decide to set up shop. so, yes, we've been catching hundreds of the suckers in little dishes of vinegar (apple cider) with saran wrap on top (with holes to let them in) and wine bottles with traces of wine left in them.

i even tried to bake the suckers one time - i left a pie place in the over with a bit of wine in it overnight and when i woke up shut the oven door and turned the heat way up. well, i probably toasted a bunch but was not cruel enough to turn on the oven light and watch them burn.

however, i am cruel enough for my latest killing method - the hand-vac. this thing is great. you aim it where they are and fire away! most are sucked in instantly but a few try to outrun it and that's where the fun begins. as with the gravity of small planets there is a point of no return and many flies seem to hang in mid-air as they slide over the precipice, picking up speed as they enter the machine.

it would be way cool to add sound effects to the process - alas fruit flies are too small to make much of a thud or 'smuck' noise as they die...
andy samberg's 'iran so far'
check out the cameos - also, the nbc feed of the clip has better resolution but the sound is a tad muted and it's hard to tell the lyrics...

also saw the second simpsons of the season - it reminded me of a repeat i saw the other day of one of my favs - when bart is given type='text'>cell issues

so for the past bit, ever since i changed my cell number to a local ottawa number, i've been receiving text messages for someone named sarah. now, i'm not well-versed in how texting works so i didn't (and still, largely don't) know how to contact the person and let them know that i'm not the person they're trying to contact.

i've tried replying to the texts i've received but they're coming from windows live messenger and therefore i'm not sending them directly to the person but to their email account. the people i have been able to contact, as well, have not responded so i'm not really sure what's going on.

what i've been able to gleam, without really digging too much (cause i could just forward all the messages to my email account...) is that the person's name is sarah and that she used to date a guy but they recently split up (his last email to her had the subject line: don't be a child). the ex has some sort of relationship now with lyndsey who just happens to be sarah's best friend. sarah told lyndsey to have relations with the ex while at the airport (i think she went to africa - many of the text messages are titled re: africa) - btw, relations is my word... the ex uses a less sensitive word...

the ex uses the word 'whack' in sentences like the following... (surprise, surprise) so my last few bills were not reaching me. not a big deal as i'm set up for direct withdrawal but it meant that i didn't know that i was being fleeced from the get go with my 'plan'.

a couple of weeks ago i called to change my number over to an ottawa local number and talked to some guy who asked me who i worked for. for the third time i told him that it was queen's (i didn't want to get into the whole mess about who i did and didn't work for and for how long etc). he said that on the computer i work for canadian tire - to which i said, 'yeah, that's what it says but i've never worked for crappy tire - i don't know why they put this on my account'. well, he says that it doesn't matter cause it's a good deal and i should stick with it. i said 'ok'.

this was the umpteenth time i've called bell over the past year - the first was useless. i talked to a cheery east-coaster about my plan and she was totally lost... wanted to know why i hadn't signed up for a bundle plan (i had - canadian tire) and didn't seem to know why my payments at the time weren't being received.

other calls were also pointless - the most recent boondoggle being that they didn't show up when they said they would to install the phone line, but showed up 2 hours later and then complained that we weren't there and told primus that we didn't have a phone connection with them (during which time we received calls for the service store around the corner - two houses away!).

today was also funny. going over my contract i notice that my long distance for the past month was $12. i'm supposed to have a 7 cent/minute plan so this means that i've been screwed over as they were charging me 40cents/minute... and... they've been doing this since day one! despite my calls to bell about my account they hadn't changed anything...

so i phone them up - they're experiencing a higher volume of calls than normal (when are they experiencing normal volume?). then i talk to this guy - richard, who says 'is it your husband's account?'

yeah... so i'm like seething but think, well, the guy's heard three words out of my mouth so far so perhaps he'll clue in... so i say 'no... it's my account' to which he says, under his breath, 'there's only a man's name on this account'.

um, hello? perhaps richard, who barely managed to spit out three words in a row in thick french accent (which does mean he's not indian at least...).

once i told him my name he didn't apologize or anything - didn't change his tone at all and right away acknowledged that my account had been set up wrong (for starters), shouldn't have been made out to canadian tire (you think?) and that, yes, i shouldn't have been charged for the long distance charges. so, he changes the last 90 days of my account (a policy - they can't do more) and tells me that i must change my plan. this might be a good thing though... christine is looking at getting a cell and we could get a family plan (of course we had thought of ditching bell altogether...).

so richard is emailing me some potential alternative plans. he did look up queen's corporate plans but got confused cause there were two (and, coincidentally, if you sign up for a multi-year plan and change jobs, or they ask you who you work for and it's not the one on the contract, you have to change your plan... um... i'll have to look into the contract to see how that works...).

btw - a quick peek at the bell plans leaves a bitter aftertaste in my mouth...

p4w now in queen's' hands...

queen's and the whig are both reporting on the final sale of the entire p4w grounds (8 acres) to queen's for a tidy sum of somewhere in the neighbourhood of 5 million.

btw - the whig has a new site design that ranks up there with some of the oddest reconfigurations i can remember... it's pretty ugly. it would appear that they are trying to do away with most of the images on the site and work in javascript and css in its stead. the good thing is that the number of articles available has jumped considerably. i would nix the sky blue colour scheme (ugh!) and perhaps try out some more imaginative fonts... you also need a map and gps system to find the whig logo (about two inches down, on the left).

anyway... in other news the city finally released the newest newsletter on the lvec (a full month late i might add). the 'monthly newsletter' skipped august it would seem although it sure makes up for lost time by providing such riveting info as the fact that the noise from concerts in the surrounding area would be 5 decibels less than expected as "This reduction was achieved as a result of including the lower roof wall, which was not fully designed when the original concert modelling was completed."

so... that means that the lower roof wall has been redesigned... interesting. i guess we'll have to wait until it's finished to see what that means. as of yet we're still operating on the 90% plans that were tabled over a year ago - no new plans have been released.

the webcam of the site does show that the bubble wrap top is now in place and much of the sides are quickly resembling, well, sides.

i will hopefully be getting internet soon (primus contacted bell on the day that we were supposed to be hooked up and bell said that we weren't hooked up (they showed up 2 hours late anyway - but we were hooked up, only to a phone line around the corner) and so they canceled our connection... no, they didn't phone and ask us anything). oh, and primus phoned last night to tell us that they were connecting things next week... but the message was only in french. gah! i phoned the number and asked the woman who answered (and was ticked that I wanted english on the french line) to hear the message in english and she said no... she couldn't do that, and besides, i wasn't on the account anyway. i hung up on her.

wiki scanner

there's a fun new tool that has been getting a lot of buzz and ruffling a few feathers as it lists all the organizations (by ip address) that have edited wikipedia pages, along with their edits. i've had some fun checking out a few that i thought might be illuminating - molson... labatt... stuff like that. but i found a pretty good one today... benny hinn ministries.

benny is a crook and liar and easily one of the sleaziest people around. he hosts a show wherein he claims to heal people - then he jet sets away on his luxury jet and lives it up in $10,000 a night hotels and the like. his suits cost more than i make in a year. the cbc did a little expose on him recently that was fun but only scratched the surface.

the wikiscanner page on benny hinn is a veritable feast of funny, albeit in a geeky cyber way.

and... it would appear that someone within the ministries is not a big fan of benny and his work... adding the following to a rather innocuous post about how he gives sermons in cities 'in which he take a lot of money from the lame and doesn't do anything which heals them but pretends that they can be healed. Hell awaits him.'

and to drive that home the next line was added...

"This man will surely spend eternity with his father the Devil."

a more puzzling edit was for the page for Don Garlits, the 'father of drag racing' where a criticism that he has professed anti-homophobic opinion was cleansed...

tribulations of apartment searches

ok, we've been meaning to mention a bit of the funny and frustrating that has occurred during our recent (ongoing) search for an apartment for september. i will write a bit about some of the more interesting places and people we've met but just had to include one response to an email about an ad i received this evening...

to begin, here's the ad that i responded to...

Available Now FREE HEAT, HYDRO, PKNG 1 bdrm apt + den & type='text'>'abomination'

so the reviews are coming in for smartcentres' proposed alcan development and so far they ain't good.

a public hearing last night railed against the proposal to plop a new sprawlmart and crappy tire tucked in behind the wendy's and shoppers. it's a big project and one hot on the heels of the king's crossing development that's been taking over the north end. the combined heft of just the one alcan development would, in theory, equal the whole of downtown kingston's retail space.

gah.

what is more, the alcan project would sidetrack another plan underway to bring a 'high-tech business park' to the area from queen's. i'm not sure if there would be overlap as i had heard earlier that queen's was earmarking the eastern flank of the site near the apartments at the beginning of concession. there was a kerfluffle about the potential for this development to uproot the baseball diamonds and fields there...

i'll post some pics of the site in a bit - for now here are the links to kings crossing for a recap of the 401 plaza-ish thing that throws a monkey wrench into these new proposals.

howard sloan, a proponent of the plan, said that having a home-improvement store so close to the downtown would "cut my fuel and travel time in half". as the rona on princess is located just about 3.5 km from the alcan site this would mean that howard lives around division and princess... man, just think... he could save 8 minutes off his commute!
<img width='1' middle of my email address (which google doesn't recognize - they say so right here).

i responded with the following...

Hi there,

<span made it to my inbox) - while we share a
great name I don't live anywhere near <span style="color: rgb(102, 0, />
Dear Paul,
Thanks again for your call the other day regarding putting in wood floors
upstairs.

I was wondering, since there will already be construction going on in the
house at this point, if it would be too much trouble to ask to have a door
put on the third bedroom upstairs where I will be staying?

I noticed that this last year the screen had broken on the guy who was
staying in the room, so I thought it might be a useful change to safeguard
against future breaks.

Just thought I'd ask.

Thanks,

Dave Dorey

so... i responded with the short, but i consider witty, rejoinder...

I'm not Paul so while your request sounds reasonable I cannot fulfill it.

once again... you've got a great name but i think you're confused about where you're sending type='text'>kingston - home of the big box store

article in the whig today about the possibility for yet another big box development in k-town. this one would be plopped at the corner of sir john a. and princess, just behind the paint and pet food place and would include a new crappy tire and walmart. and... the new stores would dwarf the old ones. yep, they are planning larger versions of the already massive sites.

while the cdn tire would be bigger, by 1,800 square metres, than the current record holder out on gardener's road (the new one would be 110,000 square feet for imperial comparison). by the time it's completed, though, one in halifax will have been built at a mind-numbing 14,000 square metres (the gardener's one is a relatively puny 8,400). that's a hell of a lot of wd-40, second-rate electronics and discounted camping gear.

however, both of these stores would have sand kicked in their faces by the 20,000 square metre behemoth that is the new walmart (215,000 square feet), some 7,500 square metres bigger than the current one in the township.

apparently there is demand for these guys - along with a new department store and hardware store (the first lowes perhaps???). i was hoping for an ikea. to figure out the walmart demand they actually counted licence plates and did a geographical analysis of where people were coming from. yep, if you went to walmart over the past few months and had not stolen a car to get there, they most likely know.

i have no idea what this will do to the kings crossing development taking shape over on division at the 401. already they've begun the clear cut and assessment of the groups in prep of constructing that big box heaven. wild stuff. and we can start the betting on what the old cdn tire will become once the new one is up and running. i've voting for waterpark.
<img width='1' height='1' the past year. it looks ok but i'm concerned as to what the star shaped thingy is in the middle. the flailing arms off to the side are also kind of interesting. a marina is tucked in at the right-hand side looking an awful lot like a tetris block. it is said that the centre piece star would be a site of events and goings on during the summer, sort of like an overflow for happenings at confed basin. it is said to be a 'grassed amphitheatre'. the squigglies on the left are sail sculptures meant to be both aesthetically pleasing and help block out cross winds. to me they look like snakes doing some sort of synchronized routine. info is at the following city website.<br clear="all" a grand old time.

not that it's all that exciting but here's a snippet of what i found today... i very boring but enlightening back and forth that someone decided was important backed the proposal and this really is the oddest looking thing on their website. i must say though that i kind of like it - it's distinctive anyway... although i don't know where anyone would park...

however, the one that might have the most legs is that put forward by the forrest group. not nearly as cool looking - more brutishly normal to tell the truth.

k7waterfront.com is interesting although short on details. it does include a 360 degree tour of the site where the buildings look semi-translucent and all the boats at the marina are the exact same but is kind of cool.

wiki travel's take on k-town

one of wikipedia's more ugly sisters is wikitravel. it takes a very brief look at kingston that is kind of cute...

for instance here is the two sentence analysis of queen's...

Queen's University: Another of Kingston's most famous institutions. The focus of these restaurants are more on the waitresses and less on the food, though the latter is not too bad at either place. Wooden Heads Located on Ontario St., Atomica located on Brock St.

i wasn't aware.

more fun is the response that ristorante luigina had, accessible through the 'discussion' section. they were not appreciative of being included in the higher end establishments.

GOOD DAY, we at RISTORANTE LUIGINA have come across the review written about our Restaurant. We are not sure the source, but we are thankful for the appreciation for our cuisine. We, however, DO NOT AGREE WITH THE "SPLURGE" HEADING, and the "above $50 and $100" quote, as we feel that for an average meal (appetizer, main, dessert and glass of wine) the pricing woul be approximately $37 per person. Furthermore, this price is actually lower than the other Restaurants mentioned, even though the quality of our food, service, and anbience is higher.

post exam celebration

a little bitty of a story on the queen's campus security page... amidst the numerous bikes going missing is the following:

May 1, 8:40 am: Residences - Campus Security was informed a small fire was set behind one of the Residence buildings, likely during the previous evening or very early morning. Security and Environmental Health & Safety staff attended and confirmed some text books were set on fire and then put out with a fire extinguisher.

Another good one... note the date...

April 1, 3:45 am: Residences - A student reported his 32" Digimate plasma screen television was stolen from his room while it was left unlocked and unattended around midnight. That was followed later by the same caller reporting one or two males were looking in the window of their house, but during this report the caller realized they knew who the individuals were and hung up. Brisbin, Brook, Beynon, Architects, have started to work on the interior design of the facility, involving key stakeholders. The interior design involving the Kingston Frontenacs, Kingston & District Sports Hall of Fame and the Arts community is expected to by complete by February/March 2007. "

in the latest update, released march 4th, does not mention the design at all. ellis don hasn't updated it's site in a while
<a of the cataraqui river so i can just bet that the spurt of development along here will be greatly impacted by the construction of a big hulking bridge within the next 5 years (if council musters up enough gumption and cash to see that through). what with the davis tannery development and the wellington st. extension the inner harbour will be bustling.
slow news night in k-town

so it must have been considered a quiet and relatively peaceful day yesterday around eastern ontario. not much to comment on really... elections aren't for another month and a bit and the weather hasn't collapsed around us (sunny skies for the weekend!). yet i'm assuming that they could have come up with something a bit more substantial (but, considerably less cute) for the lead story on the 6 o'clock news last night. here's what they went with... sorry about the caps - that's how they post stuff on their website.

Stolen Pumpkin
Oct, 05 2006 - 11:20 PM

IT'S THE SEASON FOR PUMPKINS.
TIME TO HARVEST, CARVE ...AND MAYBE EAT THEM IN A PIE.
BUT A LITTLE KINGSTON GIRL FINDS HER "PROUD" PUMPKIN PATCH THE VICTIM OF AN EARLY TRICK, INSTEAD OF A TREAT.
NEWSWATCH'S LUCY LOPEZ EXPLAINS.

RIGHT OFF THE SCHOOL BUS -- 3-YEAR-OLD MARY JANE VINCENT HAS BEEN GOING TO HER GARDEN EVERY DAY AFTER SCHOOL.
....TENDING TO A PUMPKIN PATCH SHE PLANTED IN THE SPRING.

MARY JANE VINCENT:
"IT'S RIGHT HERE, LAST TIME I SAW IT.
WHERE'S YOU'RE PUMPKIN?
SOMEBODY STOLE IT."

THE DISAPPEARANCE OF HER PRIZED PUMPKIN HAS LEFT THIS 3-YEAR-OLD FEELING BLUE.

MARY JANE:

"SAD CUZ SOMEBODY TOOK IT."
<br KNOW WHY SOMEBODY WOULD STEAL A PUMPKIN LIKE THIS, I MEAN IT WAS ABOUT 8 INCHES ROUND. IT WASN'T BIG ENOUGH TO BAKE A PIE WITH. WHY BOTHER TO TAKE IT."

MARY JANE WAS PLANNING TO MAKE A JACK O LATERN FOR HALLOWEEN.
INSTEAD, SHE'S ON THE RECEIVING END OF A PETTY TRICK.
BUT THERE IS STILL A TREAT IN THIS "GREAT PUMPKIN CAPER."

JOHN VINCENT:

"WE'RE GOING TO GO TO GRANDPA'S PUMPKIN PATCH. serves to deconstruct the queen's identity. following the link provides another link and a thoughtful, introspective pic of 'symposium director' frances darwin. it seems that next week, september 18th to be exact, there'll be a big meeting of the minds down at grant hall, the iconic stomping ground of sometime graduation ceremonies and frosh week sex talks by sue johansen (side note - during the sex with sue talk a buch of overzealous theatre students whipped condoms at the audience - condoms that had but two months to go till their expiry date. The message, i gleamed from the talk, was if you're going to have sex, use a condom and do it very soon, preferably before halloween).

so the talk, on queen's identity, will revolve around 7 topics and grad students will dart about the proceedings to make sure that conversations stay on topic. The topics include the ol favs tuition and education (go figure that one eh?) as well as student apathy, queen's and kingston relations and queen's identity (i sense a theme). having queen's identity as a separate topic seems like overkill to me but what do i know?

the masterminds behind the talk tilt to the artistic side of the queen's spectrum - mostly film students who like to mention that they've traveled extensively or have performed with choclair (!?). well there is a documentary project attached to this thing so that kind of makes sense.

the interesting thing however is the fact that there is the promise of food - and i quite enjoy food. it's supplied by student clubs which could be a hit or miss proposition, but still, free is free.

they ask, if you're interested in attending, to email for info as space may be limited. you really have to look on the site to find this plea so they might have a few people show up just the same but the email is below if anyone's interested.

email

btw - the oddly futuristic (and now chrome plated) triangular fortress to overlook lake ontario out at the airport. the designs on the site are more detailed than those that first appeared on this blog last year, with landscaping plans drawn in and tiers nestling the building into the hillside. it looks like a spacecraft emerging from its underground bunker, or a boomerbang tossed by some futuristic metallic monster that has become wedged in the ground. i strongly suggest visiting the site to view all the wonderful angles and descriptions.

i must admit that i'm pretty wary of the progress on the structure though, as the behnisch site says that constructure was supposed to take place between 2003 and 2006 - obviously this is not the case (or is it?). i haven't seen any construction taking place out there.

i'll post a pic of the magic soon.

www.behnisch.com - one even made fark.com (from brockville! - that's crazy!).

here's the recorder and time's story in its entirety...
i'll post snippets of the whig story next.

The scoop on dog poop

By DEREK ABMA

Staff Writer

By now, most people know that dog walkers are supposed to pick up any fecal matter excreted by their canine friends while they're out and about.

What is less clear for people is whether an offence has happened if a dog poops on someone's property but is scooped up afterward.

People's dogs are often on long leashes and drawn to grassy areas for their bodily functions. But property owners don't always appreciate such occurrences, even if the dog walker is a faithful poop scooper.

Jannette Amini, administrative co-ordinator for the City of Brockville clerk's office, said the animal control bylaw doesn't address this issue.

She said the bylaw requires dog walkers to clean up after their pets, and it prevents them from being on private property without permission if unleashed.

But it doesn't say anything to prevent a leashed dog from walking on someone's lawn or defecating there if the poop's subsequently scooped.

"Trespassing on private property, that's more of a police issue than ours," Amini said. "But the animal-control bylaw does not address that."

Constable Garry Dunklin of the Brockville police, when asked whether a leashed dog walking on someone's property could be construed as trespassing, "Nah. I wouldn't think so."

When asked if police would respond to a complaint of a dog defecating on someone's property, even if the dog's caretaker cleaned it up, Dunklin said, "That's just an all-around stupid question."

Paula Thomson, chairman of the Thousand Islands Kennel and Obedience (TIKO) Club's annual dog show, said her organization has no official stance on the issue. However, she said she has "strong feelings" about it personally.

"I don't believe that any animal, whether you pick up or not, should be allowed to relieve itself on somebody else's property," she said.

She said dogs can be trained to go to the bathroom off curbs, and be trained to hold their urges until reaching a designated area like a dog park.

Some dog owners, however, say it is not possible to control the situation at all times. Elizabeth Hampton, who owns a female pug named Jazz Blue, said she tries to have the dog do all its defecating at the park. But it doesn't always work out that way.

"When she has to go, she has to go, and it has to be there," Hampton said.

Ruth Kovacs, owner of a Shih Tzu named Rosie, agreed that sometimes it's impossible to control when a dog goes to the bathroom. She recalled a time when she stopped along County Road 2, west of Prescott, to let Rosie out of the car to go about her business.

While Rosie was defecating on the edge of someone's front lawn, the property owner came forward and demanded Kovacs take her dog away. She complied, but there were consequences, as Rosie was not finished yet.

"I got the poop all over me," Kovacs said.

Her friend, Marcel Gauvreau, said his yard in Lyn is constantly littered with dog feces. If people cleaned up after their dogs, he said he wouldn't care if these pups used his property for washroom breaks.

Gauvreau said property owners concerned about health risks left behind after poop is scooped are nitpicking.

"What about the geese and ducks around here in the park?" he said while sitting in Hardy Park. "Why single out dogs?"

Joan Mays, supervisor of health protection for the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark Heath Unit, said the agency "strongly supports people that poop and scoop."

She said scooping feces will get rid of most of the bacterial and parasitic risks it poses.

However, she acknowledged that even after scooping, there is the possibility of contamination being left behind, though she said the sun's ultraviolet rays and heat help destroy bacteria.

Mays said risk mitigation should happen whenever children play in any area where there are possible traces of animal waste.

This should include ensuring children are wearing shoes, prevent them as much as possible from putting anything found outside in their mouths, and keeping their own hands away from their mouths until after they've washed up.

"Most of the parasitic diseases that you would get from animal feces go from the fecal-oral route," she said. "So it's really the hands that are playing in the dirt and on the grass will then be put into the mouth."

Mays said the health unit has no specific stance on whether it's OK for people to let their dogs use people's lawns as a toilet and then clean up the visible mess.

She said, as a dog owner, she tries to steer her dog away from soiling other people's property, but it's not always possible.

# Published in Section b, page 7 in the Thursday, July 20, 2006 edition of the Brockville Recorder & Times.
# Posted 4:31:23 PM Thursday, July 20, 2006.

p4w plans - queen's eyes a new residence perhaps?

i've been doing some googling to see if i could find any more neato or interesting projects in the kingston area (and yes, i've heard about the transgenic mouse colony...) and came across this site that, while a bit dated, does explore kingston architecture over the years.

on the events page there are a few things worth noting that might have fallen through the civic cracks in lieu of even more heated debate surrounding lvec. the most intriguing one is the plans for the prison for women, that imposing concrete box out king st. the project is being led by 'canadian land company kingston' and basically entails getting rid of the wall and puttting up a bunch of either houses, apartments, condos or their ilk on the land. some of the proposals are shown below.

the building in the middle is the actual main prison house, the rest of the buildings surrounded by green would be brand new - in this version a mix of mostly houses with garages set to the back of the house and accessed via a secondary road at the back (top of the pic).

in this pic the houses are more "traditional" as they put it, with the garages out front leaving less space for more housing.

for those unfamiliar with the site here's a pic of the front, the buidling that remains the same in the two pics above.

the latest updates on the project are somewhat less satisfactory. queen's has decided it wants to expand even further and take upwards of 50% of the land (thus resulting in heavy cuts to the plans above).

here's what the june 2005 newsletter says about the nov 2004 meeting.

"Canada Lands had a public meeting at the end of October 2004
to discuss its vision for the Prison for Women property and to seek further input from the general public. At that meeting, Mr. Andrew Simpson from Queen’s University reiterated Queen’s interest in acquiring all or a portion of the Prison for Women property for university uses.
Since the public meeting, Canada Lands has carried on with its various sub-consultant studies, i.e., servicing reports, but at the same time continued a dialogue with Queen’s on their potential use of the site.
It has always been Canada Lands desire from the very beginning that the heritage buildings be maintained and the public consultation concluded that the views of the administration building be unfettered. These requirements were passed along to Queen’s.
Discussions continue with Queen’s that would see the university acquire approximately half of the site. The Queen’s footprint would include the heritage buildings, which would be renovated and re-used in their redevelopment schemes. The current thinking of the university would see the use of the land and buildings to house the university’s archives and research facilities. Discussions are also taking place with a number of other groups that may see partnerships put in place for joint uses.
Canada Lands would carry on and develop the western half of the property with low-density residential housing keeping in mind that the views of the lake must remain unimpeded. There would also be a walkway connecting Union Street to King Street, with the main entrance to the development coming in off of Union Street.
We hope to be in position this summer to bring forward a development application to the City, which will allow construction to begin on the residential component in 2006.
Should you have any questions, please contact Bob Dunn at (416) 952-6148 <a href:"mailto:rdunn@clc.ca"> Email: rdunn@clc.ca."

a quick look at the queen's site finds this update from a board of trustees meeting in march of 06 -

"As conversations continue with the city and the federal government regarding the King Street properties, Queen’s is in the final stages of negotiation for the Prison for Women site. In terms of the Prison for Women, the current plans call for the establishment of a facility for the Queen’s Archives in partnership with the city, as well as the Advanced Research and Education Institute devoted to University-Industry research partnerships. Further, a number of small, start-up companies are located
throughout the campus and clustering such business incubation activities at one site would decompress our facilities and meet the space needs of a number of departments. The planning funds approved at the last Board meeting will help move this project forward aggressively."

interesting... no mouse colonies though... shame that.

yo catch my dope yo-yo ing

part two of the busker calvacade...

next up we started watching the yo-yo show - john and rebecca from boston tossing about 100 yo-yos into the air and spinning them about. and goodness, if your mind goes blank thinking about all the cool things that can be done with yo-yos (um, i'm not going there) then you'd be pleasantly surprised. these kids are pseudo-retro-cool and spin a bunch of tricks together that are pretty damn impressive.

look at em go!

if you check out their site you can learn more than you possibly could have wanted to know about their show (the multiple pictures, while cool, do not do something like yo-yoing justice...). however, check out their bios and see that they've branched out beyond the highly competitive yo-yo field to include a number of highly comparable fields. such as... artistry and car magnets. now, the car magnets thing is interesting - basically magnets (wait for it...) for the car.

look - a lemon!

or this one - a cow that allows you to "Celebrate Vermont, dairy, vegetarianism, or just the love of cow."

john, the male of the duo, likes to paint and has his own website to hock his wares which, coincidentally, happen to mostly be yo-yos.

but that's not all! 2 sold out!!), or giving it out with a 20 dollar "investment" as they called it as they were hoping to stage their show across canada (and internationally) with the proceeds they rack up from buskering. good luck boys!

then it was off to see a group of breakdancers from the bronx - usa breakdancers. weak name, cool trio (although their trainer(?) didn't do much but make jokes about his girth around the middle). they was flipping out big time, like ninjas! the most impressive aspect of it was the balancing though - they could contort themselves in wild ways that must've just driven the ladies wild.

part two in a bit...

grad club update

in my queen's-related info binge yesterday i decided to see what's up with the proposed university ave and union street renovation (?) projects. a year ago a firm presented 3 different visions of the streetscape, 2 of which involved bulldozing the grad club to make way for - wait for it - a round-a-bout. ???

here's a smallish pic of what that would look like - the grad club has been replaced with "soft landscaping"

the blue thing in the middle looks like some mechanical turtle or something... errr...

well, on march 6th there was another meeting and the suspicious soft landscaping had been replaced, this time with a grad club (yah!). however they now want to tear down the nice wooden fence, extend the sidewalk and put in a new metal fence, thus killing, or severely wounding the patio. Details are here.

so - when will this take place you're wondering? jeanne ma, who led the discussings in the spring, gave this estimate...

“This is a planning project that has no current funding,” she said. “The intent [with this meeting] was to make sure people were informed.”

The project currently has no donor, and a donor is not actively being sought.

“Fundraising is managed by the Office of Advancement. This is simply a planning project. It is not my role to deal with fundraising,” she said.

apparently the university street project is not in the same dire straits as its perpendicular cousin. ma says that donors are actually pumped about this renovation and have already ponied up 5.5 million. ma says...

"Last November I was made aware that an anonymous donor was interested in helping to green the campus by planting trees. But to honour the donor’s gift, we had to do something more than just plant trees. Given the state of our urban forest, Queen’s wouldn’t have been able to guarantee their survival. We needed to create an environment in which trees would survive, but also one that would serve a bigger purpose of making Queen’s more livable, functional and memorable, a place where people want to belong and come back to … all of those things. So, through Queen’s Office of Advancement, I proposed that the donor’s gift be used for the University Avenue renovation, and the donor agreed to it. Subsequently another donor came forward and was also interested in supporting it."

the work will be done by these guys who're becoming the go-to team for queen's landscaping needs.

here's a pic of a rather boring vision - notice the median has disappeared...

they're also designing the overall campus masterplan as regards to landscaping... their plan includes the tindall field make-over - notice how it has shifted next to maccorry and that there are now a series of buildings where the field used to sit. interesting... the underground parking garage is underneath the turf.

230 million bucks, still no curtains for maccorry

as an addendum to my previous post about the wildly entertaining 'clarence' building, i thought i'd see if there were any other wildly outrageous developments in the works happening locally. then i thought, oh right, that queen's centre thingy.

yes indeed. the queen's centre, the 230 million (all numbers CDN$) will devour most of the entire block behind the jduc and pec (the curling arena has already vamoosed to its new home out off days road). here's a more detailed look than you will find on the queen's site.

sasaki associates
with a pic or two of their vision...

and...an indoor shot!

those must be commerce students gathered around - they're all one dimensional and vacuous.

of course there's always the queen's site with its in-depth coverage of the boondoggle (note the 'october 2004' in the address... up-to-date-tastic!) - the news section is a bit more recent, although a lot should have happened between August 15th of last year and now... but who knows?

and yet maccorry, the much maligned and seldom loved arts building goes without proper working blinds for another year.

in other queen's happenings, did anyone know that they've bought this building?

it'll be used for family medical activities.

in fact there's a lot of activity happening around queen's - just look at the site for more info!
major capital projects

my fav is the Botterell Hall Addition that gives the following information...
"Construction documents are underway for the construction of an addition over the loading dock of Botterell Hall from level 4 to 9. postmodern kitsch comes to kingston

i went back to see what had ever happened to that planned development out by the airport - you know, the one that was supposed to look like the boomerang and spur wicked development for all those neo-techies flooding into the region *cough*.

well... i've yet to see exactly what's going on, and the pics that i had linked before have all disappeared from the website of BEHNISCH ARCHITEKTEN, the uber-trendy architecture firm that had penned the plans. that was disappointing - i've driven out to the airport a few times (actually used the place too - fancy that... one time had to wait 15 minutes in line for my flight! craziness i tells ya!). well... i decided to search through behnisch's new web home to see if they had a pic or two up of the building, but, along the way i came across something even more interesting...

i give you "the clarence", the oh-so-european apartment complex coming to kingston's downtown. i'm not really sure what to make of it - a cubist interpretation of a cucumber salad? perhaps... any other ideas?

can you see the project on this pic? it's that big yellow/green thing in the middle!

knowing kingston, this will be controversial - anything that doesn't reek of limestone and victorian idealism is shunned for the leperous travesty it is.

to check out the site, go to the following address behnisch and make click!

that'll open a flash site - click on 'on the boards' and scroll through the list until you come to the relish kingdom.

i'll post more thoughts when they come to me...

oh, and here's the link to kincore holding's 'the clarence' site... where you can sign up for updates on the project (no timeline given). i like how they say on the page that you can 'ask' to participate in their confidential online survey, then post a link to the survey in the same sentence!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://canadianism.blogspot.com/2006/07/clarence-postmodern-kitsch-comes-to.html' title='"the clarence" - the office is somewhat abuzz with the bells and whistles that accompany new hardware. i found myself ooing over the 'chrome' plated music controls gracing the keyboard (and the cute little volume knob - a knob of all things... crazy...).

of course with a new computer in this day and age i spent the first 20 minutes hunting down and deleting every reference to aol... which meant restarting the computer to update things, and then allowing program after program automatically update itself (more restarting involved) and then getting peeved and selecting the 'restart later' button which just gives you five to ten minutes of peace before it asks you again. i hate microsoft.

downloaded firefox though - a small victory, and i can just see the look on my boss's face when he finds out that microsoft office was not included in the deal and we're left with wordperfect (they still make it!). of course it has something bundled with it and so loading the program gives you a warning that you have 60 more days before you have to agree to its bells and whistles. annoying.

anyway things are fine. new apartment which is pleasantly cool amidst this brief heat spell we're experiencing and now, with new glasses and a kettle i'm almost self sufficient. cooking will be difficult (idol is in its last throes tonight and i'm dropping by the parental unit's pad for din-din).

i think melissa will win - have from the start - but think that rex actually out-sang her last night, interesting for a guy who really can't sing all that well and has yet to string together three consecutive intelligible words when talking.

quick note

not that i'm a big fan of the whole governer general thing that's going on at the moment but i did find amusing a discussion on fark.com about the whole affair.

cheddarpants' comment was particularly chuckle-riffic!

"Yeah, she's hot. this is what i was instructing, not 'i have bin'... that's all fine and good but once i begin to navigate the teaching waters outside the boundaries of the instructional material i revert back to my clipped i and the synonym for garbage receptible.

of course i had no idea that i was doing this but my students sure picked up on the distinction. to top it off one of the other teachers, a woman from virginia, favoured another sound altogether so that her 'been' came out a relaxed 'ben'. one of my students soaked up these regional dialects like wine, swishing them around in his mouth and spitting them out to his liking. after a while (a very short while) i began to dread his raised hand and pointed questions about how i pronouced a particular word, or why i emphasized a word in exactly the way that i did. but it made me more carefully consider my own choice of words the distinct way that i would say them.

another lesson from my english teaching days involved the distinction between mass and count nouns. mass nouns are those nouns that cannot be separated into constituent parts. for example - flour (or water, or beer - count nouns for these would be bodies of water or bottles of beer). count nouns are easily numbered - 8 radios / cars / timepieces.

in doing comparisons involving mass nouns one can say that we have more or less of the noun, ie more wine today and less time to drink it.

count nouns can still use more, but substitute the word fewer for less - i have more bottles of wine in my store yet fewer customers making purchases.

finding a fewer in use today is seriously hard work. less has risen to prominence in popular and journalistic writing in the same way that gender has morphed to mean sex. both substitutions irk me, but i find the misplaced use of less when fewer is called for to be more awkward to read.

i'll see what kind of examples i can find in the next few days and list them for your perusal.

Alberta begone!

a link on fark got my attention today. apparently there are a number of canadians who make up the fark community and like to generously sprinkle canadian-themed stories amongst the links to boobies and stories about florida. take the story today, a misplaced bbc news story (actually a canoe.ca piece - the first time those two news orgs have been confused) from rambling sycophant 'link byfield' (i know, i thought his name was fake too!) about how it's about time alberta asserted it's god-given right to independence and jumped ship as the flood waters overtake canada's stern.

well the article is pretty tame and full of inane reasoning, but oddly attractive in its argumentation. heck, i could even see where he's going with this and might just be the first to wish him a fine farewell, don't let the door hit you on the ass when you leave. if this sophomorish windbag is representative of the typical albertan then more power to them.

with comments like these, who needs that stretch of treeless tar between the rockies and saskatchewan?

"We must now face the fact that the old Canada is gone forever and the new Canada is disgusting."

i happen to share the view of SDKaneda, a fark regular who comments, tongue-in-cheek of course,

"Welcome to Canada baby, where conservative fruit bats are an impotent minority!"

already the jesusland maps are being edited to reflect the sentiment, a blocky appendage, much like the takes-up-space appendix, plugged onto the fly-over states. Like an appendix as well, removing alberta would hurt, but generally we'd be better off without it and the constant irritation would finally be gone and we would be able to safely digest other problems.

not that i really want alberta to go, but i do think it's about time for an intervention. they seem smugly immune to issues like compassion, human rights and good music (save jann arden). apart from oil money they are a pit stop province, a fill-up point before hitting the mountains. apparently they are also a breeding ground for shrill, bug-eyed politicians who think they are the saviours of all that lands east of calgary. they wear funny hats and watch rodeos (and not from a kitsch standpoint).

i was only in alberta for a weekend - a little jaunt to calgary to use the airport and a stop to visit a transplanted friend. the lack of trees was shocking and the scattering of suburbs like seeds was somewhat disorienting. the city looks small from a plane, it's so spread out and underwhelming. downtown the city is nice, clean and lively albeit with enough covered crosswalks to spark images of that old mousetrap game.

i guess when it comes down to it mr. byfield's opinions are merely a nagging column or two in the sun media empire - a tabloid 'news'paper that has made a habit out of yelling at letters to the editor submissions with bold ink and a liberal use of exclamation points. the east needs, however, to witness some kind of moderate voice emerge from alberta. right now we're ingrained with the images of stockwell day, preston manning (who is now the most respected of the lot - wow!) and ralph klein, none of whom we would think of inviting to dinner let alone let on our property.

probing the depths of my knowledge

so i was sorting through a webpage today - not quite sure how i got there but i stumbled across this guy's results from a certain test he had taken (not sure if it was a guy really, but that's beside the point). so, being the intensely competitive person that i am i had to try the test out as well and luckily i wasn't at 'work' so i was able to maneuver around the pictures of rear ends with ease (a qualification - these are simply rear ends, no other appendages are shown, and neither are there glimpses of anything else that might tickle the fancy. given that you're not one hundred percent sure if these are men's or women's rear ends the opportunity to get excited is limited. that said it's most likely a nsfw site and you're thereby warned in advance).

ok... so basically the test involves looking at a bunch of butts and determining if they are male or female. any physical features (ahem) that might make the classification easier have been covered so the whole thing is pretty pg but that didn't stop me from checking over my shoulder from time to time to see if anyone was watching.

it is, quite simply, the ass identification quiz and let's just say that i am quite adept in that nether region as my score of 17 out of 19 would attest (the other guy/girl could only claim 14 right). this translates to a score that is 93% better that other people my sex and age range. pretty nifty i must say.

hey - did anyone notice the notice posted on the onion's website? apparently they are experiencing a writer's strike and therefore haven't posted anything new in a while. here is the notice at the top of the onion's front page...

"Due to the unprecedented, unwarranted, and ultimately unwise reporter strike, The Onion will be featuring highlights from past news coverage this week. Luckily for A.V. Club readers, entertainment journalists are not unionized."

i guess the thing that impresses me most is that the onion is actually making money. i also thought that the stories were cobbled together by a few college frat boys in a drunken spree of scrabble the night before the posts go live. there are, at best, 5 full stories each week with a smattering of headlines and vignettes consisting of a sentence or two. while they are undoubtedly funny - bush regales dinner guests with impromptu oratory on virgil's minor works (classic) is just one fine example - there is little substance and i'm assuming the biggest efforts come in prepping the articles for the web. anyway, we'll see how long this lasts - i will be preparing a portfolio however, just in case.
sick of electioneering

i haven't been watching as much news as usual the last few days. it's pretty depressing right now, what with the constant threats of elections and the cloud of gomery hanging over ottawa like a senators' playoffs stinkfest (thankfully we've been spared that this year).

i'm sick of it. sick of the bickering, sick of the media attention given to the bickering, and sick of the potential bickering fallout, the threat of another string of years of ineffective (more than usual) governance and the guarantee that real news will be given a back seat to political posturing for the forseeable future. yesterday stephen harper slipped to a new low in suggesting that the liberals were pushing back a non-confidence vote just to see if the health of two conservative mps would turn for the worse. of course this was for naught as the conservatives flew in the members while the liberals let their ace in the hole (who was resting up from his cancer treatment and couldn't attend) remain in treatment and continue to wait for a by-election in a riding they are somewhat guaranteed to win. there was little sense that the conservatives would wait for those two problems to rectify themselves, but that didn't stop harper from sticking his foot so far into his mouth he was tasting knee.

not that the liberals (in their current reincarnation) are blameless amidst this disgusting affair. i blame them most for missing ve day - that was a national disgrace without precedent. as obvious a ploy to demonize the opposition by positing that they would call a vote while the prime minister was across the pond recognizing the sacrifices made by canadian soldiers 60 years ago, i was surprised the opposition didn't raise more criticism, or make their own efforts to get their collective asses overseas.

it appears that the canadian public is shedding the liberals like a winter parka - it's spring and the suffocating stench of smugness has become too much. but no one is running into the arms of the conservatives, with good cause. they are a rudderless craft, still trying to iron out the lumps of a union that was both cryptic and fragile. cryptic because at the time the differences between the two parties seemed monumental, especially given their unique and quite distinct histories, and fragile because of the infighting and general feeling of loss by the members of the conservative old guard. harper has been acting like a power hungry henchman the past few months, spewing forth venom as if it had political wings, chewing up the scenery in his brooding suits and plastic hair. i have yet to hear anything resembling policy escape his lips since the last election, except when he giddily announced that the liberal budget of 2005 was a conservative budget. of course this glee lasted all of a few days before the general malaise of parliament hill rolled back into ottawa.

the only person coming out of this mess in a positive light is jack layton who has made the only constructive efforts to keep parliament going and produce something for the past 10 months of bickering. jack has even kept his smugness to a minimum, a feat of monumental effort that appears to have wrangled a number of dissatisfied liberals his way. this of course is merely speculative as the polls could shift back in favour of the liberals once conservative and bloc gains scare the canadian populace into believing that we're headed toward a conservative majority. expect to see a few more ndp come to ottawa in the next election but don't bet the house on a flood. depending on the make-up of the support we might just see a stronger liberal / ndp union next time we go to the polls if the liberal support bleeds orange. of course i'm still holding out for a green or two to make it in, especially in vote rich b.c., but i won't be holding my breath.
cultural difference as defined by grocery carts

at the no frills yesterday, waiting in line behind someone with an obvious lack of education on healthy eating (cart overflowing with food so manufactured it was the quasi-culinary equivalent of michael jackson's nose) and i got to thinking about my time in ecuador. the check-out lines in most of the country are about a foot narrower than the lanes in canada while the carts are perhaps an inch or two wider. this means that there is a constant battle to get the round peg in the square hole syndrome as people rear up to make an effort at the cash but have to resign themselves than they're not gonna fit, no way, no how. so carts are casually flung aside, directed toward people waiting in other lines or simply steered into the void, sent careening in the direction of cereal displays or sample wranglers (my term). it's somewhat fun to cast your cart aside when you reach the till, let the people behind steer it away like some wonderfully obtuse game of pass the buck. the thinking is that some employee, usually an acned male teen will tackle the carts before they do damage or create metal beaver dams to flood the front of the store with impatient customers. and you do see these employees roaming about, sometimes ripping the cart from the hands of someone who has recently emptied their catch at the cash and maneuvering it toward a cache of other carts waiting nearby.

i guess they are trying to avoid anyone stealing the carts, and given that labour costs are so low they can afford to hire a few extra hands to help people get their bags to their cars. i find it silly though because they simply load up the bags on other carts (double knotted bags - they tie your groceries off) and wheel the whole mess to your car, a process that could easily have taken place with the original cart had it been designed to fit through the cash area.
extended big country mega mix

i love multi-tasking. it's really amazing that microsoft has not incorporated tabbed browsing in explorer - what are these people on? they're so behind the curve now they deserve italics - they're so behind it's silly. google main on auto update lets me know if there are any bites on the job front - i got a curt but cordial reply to my inquiry yesterday saying that they will be contacting shortly those lucky few who have a shot for the position so that means i'm still in it. and therefore, because i'm using the oh so sexy firefox browser i can see if there are new emails by simply gazing northward because the tab will refresh and read 'inbox 1' if anything comes along. and yes, i am aware that i could have the same update goodness in explorer by looking southward but really i have so many tabs open at the moment (just because i can!) that they would all be compressed into one laddered tab that would say something along the lines of 'microsoft internet explorer (5)' or something and require extra button pressing just to find out the same information.

part of my multi-tasking binge is the use of shareaza - a bunch of my cds never made it to ecuador and therefore i'm a little short on the musical side of things. i did recently purchase the new ben folds, a wonderfully subtle take on the early bf3 stuff with lots of piano drums and bass, but it's the older stuff that i miss, especially in the wake of that cbc show last year - 50 tracks that woefully overlooked some of the most innovative and memorable songs of my cancon cannon. among the many with the most impact upon me were the incredibly catchy 'things i do for money' by the northern pikes and 'she's so young' by the pursuit of happiness. so i snapped the both of them off the hard drives of other afficianados and stumbled across a few other older jems that had slipped my mind. one of which prompted the title of this entry - big country's odd titled 'living in a big country', but it was some extendaplay version that added annoying ruffles, bells and whistles to the otherwise perfect slice of 80s musical one hit wonderness.

so today i will continue to plod forth on the newspaper article - it's a concise and disappointing two paragraphs at the moment (those were hard fought paragraphs too...), and make an effort to pick up some food for the household as we're dangerously low on provisions. christine also seems to go through cottage cheese like it was logic to stephen harper's spastic conservative reasoning.

living here in london has made me think about a few things going on in kingston recently. the whig is gaga over the john labatt centre and it's impact - both positive and negative - in london and the potential parallels that may form once the untitled (probably springer something or other) kingston arena finally breaks ground. the thing is that london is in the midst of a lengthy and very expensive revamp of the entire downtown area, a main part of which (but definitely not entirely made up of) is their spanking new arena. there are also a new library and convention centre, not to forget the sparkling newish covered market (that sits across the street from the jlc). each of these is hoped to bring new life to a downtown that largely sits lonely on the curb, waiting for crowds. most people in london navigate the periphery, bypassing the downtown and venturing down only when necessary. the main east-west artery, dundas street, shuts down after 6 basically and becomes a dimly lit playground for the shadier element of the population. richmond is fairly thriving and appears to be a nice sister street to something along the lines of bank in ottawa, packed with trendy bars and boutiques, but it doesn't act as much of a funnel to the other, more distressed parts of downtown. and even richmond could use some sprucing up, more streetscape upkeep and signage to make it a destination.

what i'm saying is that london is not a viable example in kingston's hunt for a new arena. the jlc has been wildly successful in luring people to events and most londoners i've talked to have been bullish in supporting it's being built but the conversation rarely ventures into financing or more controversial aspects of the construction. further i'm hard pressed to see any spill over effects on neighbouring streets (although i have heard that restaurants are enjoying the spoils) - and the arena is smack dab in the middle of a bunch of pubs and eateries - unlike the anglin bay proposal which is a good hike from princess st. it could also be that i'm used to a bustling downtown and can't imagine london's being all that worse when in fact it could have been a lot worse before the jlc was built.

i can somewhat understand kingston city council's decision to locate the arena on the bay - they are trying to expand downtown northward along wellington, to justify the north block study and create a magnet for this growth in the new arena. this would take pressure off of ontario st. and better allocate parking, but it appears to me to be a case of the chicken and the egg. it's the same situation with the lack of an overpass linking centennial drive while they continue to develop gardiner's road. we'll see.
putting together my post-ecuador life

it's officially a month since i got back to ontario leaving behind the mountains and smells of b.c. and hammering the final nail in the coffin of my internship in ecuador.

so far life has progressed at a rather leisurely pace since then - there has been progress on a few fronts - i managed to address my mom's landscaping needs by planting and manicuring some of the beds around the front and side of her house and i placed a few stones and things around for ambience... i also did some painting for my mom and sister (the fumes eventually made me a little iffy and gave me a dull headache-like dizzyness that was none too fun) and wrestled with my brother's newish (one year old) dog that is shaped like a sectional and produces enough dog saliva to irrigate saskatchewan. eventually i headed off to london (ontario) where christine is holed up in a charming little flat just to the west of downtown. i spend most of my time checking job sites and crafting emails or resumes or cover letters in the hopes of landing the big one.

it's may and there are a number of jobs out there but they're mostly directed at students and require that one is heading back to school in the fall. as i've already had one of these jobs anyway (kingston millenium - that's how they spell it - project, building a website and such *the project was called biotech kingston) and don't plan on returning to studies in the fall anyway i'm not suitable for such opportunities. what i'm thinking at the moment is that most available jobs in my field right now are dependent upon the funds offered up by the gov - why hire for keeps when you can float a summer position that's basically covered by a series of federal grants. that means that i'm in the lurch trying to plan my next move, trying to guess when the flood of these positions comes to a close and they begin with the real hiring of live bodies.

the position in ottawa with friends of the earth international is appearing to be a dead end but i am still clinging to hope. i sent out an email today, the one week anniversary of the closing date for applications, spelling out my skills and abilities and asking to be considered and hoping that they liked my resume blah, blah, blah... reading over the posting it does appear that i'd be a good fit with the group but i might not have the goods for an interview... we'll see.

i was going to phone them but they had gone out of their way to state that phone calls regarding the job were not appreciated so i typed up my missive instead. i fretted over the address at the beginning of the email, oscillating between hello and hi for a few minutes (i went with hi) - both seemed rather stiff but i wasn't about to go writing down dear or some kind of derivative... is there a protocol on that sort of thing?

so now i'm gonna get started (again) on a letter for a newspaper - probably the whig - detailing my experiences in ecuador and appealing for people to give CIDA internships a try. i was approached, electronically that is, by someone who's compiling different web journals or blogs by expats for a website. i told him i would love to have my site included in his listing and would provide any kind of info or help he needed to get the site up and running (should be good to go in about a month or so... i'll post the info here when it goes live).<div
